- For boreholes: insist on a written, itemised quote (drilling, casing, pump, plumbing), a yield test, and clarity on per-metre pricing — ask what happens if the hole comes up dry. Confirm whether your area needs municipal or water-use authorisation.
- For tanks: ask about the tank warranty (good polyethylene tanks carry 8–10 years), the stand or base spec, and whether overflow and first-flush are included. Size your storage first.
- For drinking water: any borehole or rainwater supply must be tested and treated before you drink it — ask who does the test and what treatment they recommend.
- Red flags: large upfront deposits, no physical address, uncapped per-metre drilling charges, and "guaranteed water" promises — no honest driller guarantees water.
